display woes

Postby acynicalclown » Tue Oct 26, 2004 3:09 am

experiencing garbled graphics in games, blurred pictures in movie files, and distorted graphical icons on my desktop

this problem started last week, which coincidentaly was around the same time that my previous monitor decided to call it quits on me; so up until I got a new monitor, I had just written-off those display problems as the forecoming signs of a dying monitor -- but I guess that was not the case, because now they're back, and it's obviously not the monitors fault (as since I've tested several others to verify this)

I took a quick screenshot of what my desktop looks like before I turn off drawing accelerations, which can be found here:

the same thing happens to video files, games, etc...

I've tried a bunch of random things to try and fix it too, everything from spyware checks (which came up clean since I'm fairly good at keeping up with them), uninstalling/installing all manner of drivers, updating a slew of crap, taking my graphics card (Radeon 9600) on and off, and a bunch of other crap... but I've come up with no solution

needless to say, I'm far from being even moderately well-versed in the realm of PC-tech, so any help from the pros would be more than welcome, because I'm at my wits' end with this problem

thanks

Are there any Yellow Exclamation marks Image in Device Manager beside the Display Adapter?

Do have the latest drivers for your Radeon 9600 card?

What Operating System are you using?

ok, thanks -- framework and my graphics card drivers both updated, but... no change in my display problems, it's the same as it was before

there was a moment as I was booting up my PC when it looked fine again, but my hopes became shattered when it went right back to normal a few seconds later

Strange indeed :|

I was looking at your screenshot you supplied with your initial thread, the icons on the desktop are fine, the only thing I saw were lines threw your icons in the Control Panel. And what's funny about it is, all the icons that have these lines through them are the actually O.S. icons. If you notice the BDE Administrator and the Multi - Channel Sound icons do not have this effect.
I'd say your video card may be on the outs or like Restek asked you may have tried to overclock and wound up with this outcome.

yeah, the desktop icons are fine, but the control panel and window icons are all screwy (along with the other aforementioned troubled areas)

and no, I've never tried to overclock anything on my PC; infact, I haven't even touched my graphics card since I installed it over six months ago -- and up until this problem came about, I have not had a single problem with it

oops... almost forgot to stop by and say thanks for trying to help

turns out it was just my graphics card working its way up to hardware heaven -- kind of a shame, considering it wasn't any more than six months old, but... whatever, stuff breaks

so even though it meant nothing in the end, thanks for all replies I got in attempt to help better my situation

later,

Joe  (<--- cuuuuuuuute)
