missing cd drive

Hi I have been trying to install win 98 on an old computer I have managed to partition and format but when I run run from the start up disk I only get as far as the e prompt and it tells me me I have no valid cd rom the cd drive funtions ok ie the tray operates in and out and the light on the front lights up
I have checked in the bios and there is no cd drive there also the boot up sequence only offers A-C no cd can anyone offer advice please

You need a Win98 BOOT DISK with CD-Rom support.

If its not being seen in the bios, there are several factors. bad ide cable, loose ide cable, bad cdrom. Since its an older machine, there are some bios that have an enable and disable for ide 1 and ide 2. Its a long shot, but you might check closer in the bios to see if ide2 is disabled. other than that, test with a know good cdrom---I just saw a 52x cd burner advertised for 29.95--a new one would be a step up and a faster windows install
