XP shared internet/network with win 98 system

Postby CanadianTek » Thu Sep 23, 2004 7:17 pm

My buddy Brian lives about 30 miles outta town, and called me.. he has a Win XP on dial up, and it has a network card in it.

He wanted to let his kids access the internet thru his system, using the second family pc on win98se -without having to sign up a second account, add a modem, or buy a hub, switch or router.

I asked, does the 98se have a network card,

yes

So.. i figured.. i would go over and tie these two systems together.. as i have done it a couple other times for a couple other people, however, they were using hubs or routers or high speed.

So i ran the win xp ... create a home network utility...

i loaded it onto a floppy.. (netsetup utility)

then ran it in the win 98se box

i tied them together with a cross-over cable.. so that the transmit from one nic becomes the receive signal on the other stations nic.. that made sense

i gave the xp an ip of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0

i gave the win 98 system dynamic (although it tends to pick 192.168.0.115)

i gave them both the workgroup name of MSHOME it was the default, but during one of the re-boots.. the xp home unit switched or converted over to workgroup=workgroup.. not sure how that happened.. so i switched it back to mshome

i dial the xp out..
i can surf,
i can msn
i can browse.. no problem

i installed zone alarm free edition.. to protect him from what could come in from the net

i set up the fire wall to let the entire ip range of 192.168.0.1 - 0.254 come thru
i granted ie, msn, outlook express, and his anti virus get in and out.. no problem

(i noticed zone alarm had by default already configured the ppp/slip dial up connection to his isp provider, as well as the default nic inside the computer)

other settings there.. on the xp .. and im assuming they were defaults..
- use default gateway ... was / is selected
- append primary dns suffix? etc..
- append parent ...
- I SET THIS NEXT ONE AS IT MADE SENSE TO ME ..such that the win98 station could, would see it??? >> REGISTER THIS CONNECTION IN DNS
?? dont know if it was right or wrong.. but i did it anyway..
- Enable LMHOSTS is on (default)
-cant remember now..if the xp was set to Enable or Disable NetBIOS

the dot also appears in the "use following dns server address" box, but both address lines underneath it appear to be blank

i went to the win 98se system

i again installed zone alarm.. and just to make sure configured its firewall to allow traffic from xp box in and its traffic out.. again specifying the ip range of 192.168.0.1 - 0.254 come/go thru - no problem

also set ie, outlook express.. and a couple others so the kids can do the net thing

i configure the network properties of the tcp/ip protocol of the win 98se nic to include the ip of 192.168.0.1 (the xp's ip) - as both a dns server? and .. as the gateway

i also added the xp's gateway address.. which seemed to be a fixed number inside of the xp's zone alarm.. as a secondary dns and/or gateway (i cant remember now) in the win 98 config.

now.. during this config.. zone alarm tossed up .. some sspd.exe file and spooler.exe as wanting access.. i granted them, as i recall reading some where that in order to share some system resources.. within a network, this was essential

so at the win 98 system.. i pinged 127.0.0.1 and nic worked, i pinged 192.168.0.115 and the same nic, i guess what they call the outside address worked.. i then pinged 192.168.0.2 (the xp box) - tadah.. it worked

so i then went to my computer on the xp.. it said

+entire network
+ mshome
+KIDZ
+shareddocs

and it could see the win98 machine

so i went back to the KIDZ computer.. and boldly said..

ping www.yahoo.com

resolved.. no packet loss

so i took that ip 209.117.x.y (cant remember x and y) and pinged it to

it could see the outside world

soooo, naturally i fired up .. ie on the win 98 system..

and got dns error.. page could not be displayed :(

msn did not work either

now when i went back to check a few things.. in the win98 network properties

i found myself in a bit of a quandry and im hoping.. someone can answer this..

in the DNS configuration tab..

i had originally put.. Host: KIDZ and left domain blank

i later wondered if it was asking for the name of the DNS host, which i had assumed to be his ibm/xp machine.. so i put.. NETSERVER in .. as that was the "Full Computer Name" i had assigned the xp system,

i experimented with this.. with no success..

still could not browse the net

on the WINS configuration page.. i think by default in win 98 .. it was set to use DHCP server for WINS resolution..

hoping this is giving you enuf info to work on...

WHY CAN THE KIDZ system not surf the net if we can see the xp, ping to the outside world, get resolution of domain to an ip then ping that ip and get test results back?
especially when i can see the kidz pc from inside of win xp = my computer or win xp - windows explorer-network neighbourhood..

(things i did not check.. was.. could i see the directory structure of the xp machine from inside of the network neighbourhood of the win 98 system, ?? i think i tried once.. but i was i a rush as i had spent 2 hours at my budds place, and had other things to do.. did it thinking i was just gonna be a quick connect, tick tick boom done.. - because he lives 30 miles away.. he said he would give me some gas money.. but now im more curious about where i screwed things up.. and/or answers to the unknown.. then i am his gas money.. i just dont want to have to make 3 or 4 more trips out..

did not think to try connecting with zone alarm down.. as all other indicators say we can see each other.. and handshake.. secondly.. he wants the protection of the firewall there to help reduce some of the unwanted stuff.. hacks, pop-ups and spies.. etc..

any idea's

.......even if there is a published white paper somewhere.. some college thesis, anything.. with a little more help then microsofts troubleshooter where you can answer the questions 3 or 4 different ways truthfully and get the same answer.. "it appears you are not connected to the internet.. HELLO? no guff? really? "

or some other tech notes, or web sites that says.. this is what you need.. to have..
to configure.. to set..

thanking you in advance..

I was insterested in trying what you did a while back and concluded that there were just too many variables and too much time consumed to resolve all of the issues. A modem is only $10 and a dual phone port from radio shack is $4. Total installation time is probably less than the time you spent describing what you have done already.

Your real problem, is that your Internet provider is going to want to give Win98 an IP address and it isn't going to be 192.168. x .x. Get rid of the static IP and let XP figure it out.

more details.. for clarity..

Postby CanadianTek » Fri Sep 24, 2004 1:09 pm

The trick here is my buddy has 6 children and noooo access to high speed (and hence limited funds tooo ...kids are expensive and living 30 miles out of town puts him tooo far away from the c.o.-central office - to get an effective dsl connection)

So having 2 modems.. (they are slightly a little more expensive in canada, but that is not the problem) - doesnt solve if if 2 of the 8 family members needs to be on line.. simultaneously..

but thanx for that suggestion..

as for the isp will want to give the win98se its own ip, - i think the xp is giving it... as the isp is giving the xp the dial up ppp/slip connection its own ip address.. i set the xp nic up to 192.168.0.1 and told the win98se system that 192.168.0.1 was the win98's gateway and dns server and i told the win 98se system to Automatically get an ip in doing so.. the win98 system is getting.. 192.168.0.115 (i did not pick it nor assign it, it seems to be the one that it picks up every time it reboots.. and you know with every time you set/change a feature inside of win98se, you have to reboot in order to take effect)

as for the first suggestion, i will give that a try.. taking zone alarm off either or both of the pc's.. i suppose the ICF of xp should be sufficient since.. most dial up users do get a fresh ip on reconnect.. based on a FIFO type Queue

however, i have not had toooo many problems uninstalling zone alarm but here is a tip back for anyone that finds uninstalling zone alarm messes up the tcp/ip stack

(now this will work only in xp.. and this is only if uninstalling zone alarm (or in my experiences.. Freedom Firewall) issue the following command in the start- run box:

netsch ip interface reset resetlog.txt

this causes the tcp/ip stack to be cleaned.. (out of the registry) and on reboot.. you must reboot... - it gets rebuilt.. by the o/s

any other suggestions as to what im missing here folks, please
drop me a line.. i dont want to go all the way out there.. disable his zone alarm, only to find he stilllll has the problem..

thank you..
