My PC appears to be slowing down...

Postby Aedh » Mon Sep 20, 2004 4:58 pm

Old age or maybe some programs running that I don't need? I am running both Sygate and McAfee firewalls; McAfee and AVG Anti-virus. I can always remove McAfee products if this is a major reason for slow downs but my other PC (similar components) isn't as effected by running the same software.

Thanks for any help that might be given,

Here is my log:

Well personaly you only need 1 Firewall and 1 Anti-Vrus!
I'm very surprised your not having any Conflict issues between the apps.
I don't see anything in your log that's Virus or Trojan related.
I would seriously choose which of the 2 Apps(1 Firewall & 1 Anti-Virus) you like best and un-install the other 2.

I've never heard of running more than 1 each, maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm glad you see no bad guys, removing them is such a pain.

On my other PC it's going great. I would post a log but this slow down isn't a huge problem. I'm assuming it's just the fact that i'm running 2 firewalls and 2 anti-viruses then. There is no conflict.

McAfee has caused me nothing but problems throughout the past 2 years so I decided to install Sygate and AVG. At first I was going to remove McAfee but I figured two > one.

I will remove McAfee today and see if that speeds things up (on this PC) but i'm not sure it will. A hardware upgrade me be incoming for me.

Thanks for the reply...

Ohh and anyone else have any comments about the extra virus software and firewall?

I agree with Cactus, you shouldn't have 2 Anti-Virus programs installed on the same pc at the same time, they can cause conflicts.
Also 1 Firewall is sufficient. XP has a built-in firewall also for extra protection.

I also agree... One AV and one Software Firewall. I would not use WinXp's Firewall in conjunction, especially if you are Networked... You can't share files under WinXp's Firewall. I recommend a Hardware Firewall (Router) in addition to a Software Firewall for best protection.
I'd also recommend having HJT "Fix" these entrees:
