coolweb problem which frankly refuses to go away

Postby flanners » Thu Sep 16, 2004 10:37 pm

Hi, i seem to have got a very persistent coolweb/vx2 problem. i have donwloaded and repeatedly run Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spy Sweeper and CWshredder, which each time find lots of stuff to remove... but i still get pop-ups and Spy Sweeper keeps telling me both that it still finds CWS_NS3 (and sometimes vx2) and that something is trying to change my home page and internet settings. I read the Hijack This tutorial, ran the program and deleted what looked to be the dodgy files, but the next time i run it there is always more new stuff to remove. please help, i can't seem to get this to go away on my own. My Hijack This log is attached. many, many thanks

Hi
I noticed you Downloaded HJT to a TEMP folder, always download to a folder OTHER than Temp/Temorary Internet Folders.

EG---- Open MyDocuments----Right click an empty spot and select NEW---Folder----Name the new folder HJT ---this is where you will want to save Hijackthis too, also, backups will be stored there.
Download a fresh copy from here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
or here:
http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe

First lets...Set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

**(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)**

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

wscntfy.exe

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A5F1C6CB-4A7E-5372-1963-B6EBAEC0BB23} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxy32.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] "C:\Program Files\Winamp3\winampa.exe"
O9 - Extra button: Money Viewer - {E023F504-0C5A-4750-A1E7-A9046DEA8A21} - C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyviewer.dll (file missing)

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxy32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfy.exe

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and Reboot.

Turn on System restore, before opening your browser goto TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS and make sure your Homepage is correct,if not ,type the URL you would like in the HomePage box.

Now re-run HJT and post a new logfile back here.

Windows XP ---SAFE MODE Quoted from Geekgirl .
When you finish the troubleshooting or removal procedure, if you are using the first (recommended) method, you must re-enable Normal mode. Until you do this, the computer will continue to start in Safe mode.

Windows XP includes the System Configuration Utility. If you can start the computer normally and get into Windows, this is the easiest--and the recommended way--to restart the computer in Safe mode.

To use the System Configuration Utility method
Close all open programs.
Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
Type msconfig and then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility appears.
Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK.
You then see the prompt to restart the computer. Click Restart

The computer restarts in Safe mode. (This can take several minutes.)
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode repeat steps 1-5, but in step 4, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT"
Close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.

To use the F8 method
Use this method only if Windows XP is the only operating system installed on your computer.
Start Windows, or if it is running, shut Windows down, and then turn off the computer.
Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). What is displayed depends on the BIOS manufacturer. Some computers display a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS, while others may not display any indication that this process is happening.
As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the Safe mode menu item, and then press Enter.

Once its in SAFE MODE run HJT again and have it fix the following...

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

ipkq32.exe
wscntfy.exe

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

What version of CWS do you have?
Download this newest version of CWShredder...
after downloading, run it in safe mode, fix everything it finds.

Hmmm...missed that!
You say you deleted the Temporary Internet Folder????

Which Folder did you delete??

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

None off these Folders are to be Deleted...just the contents and Sub-Folders within.

Let me know which folder you deleted and we'll create a new one.
Is the Folder still in the Recycle Bin?
If it is..right click and click RESTORE.

Let us know.

Windows will replace it on boot.
For the entrees with res://<Random .dll>
Really need to run .
Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

Do not open internet explorer until after running the tool.

Double click Aboutbuster.exe, click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them.

Once the tool is done scanning, copy the log and paste it into your thread.
with a new Hijack this log.

Hi again

-first of all, sorry for the confusion, i didn't delete any temporary internet folders, i just emptied them.

I downloaded the most recent version of CW shredder as Cactus instructed and ran it in safe mode. it said my system was completely clean, but when i rebooted spy sweeper found CWS again

I then downloaded and ran About Buster as brad suggested and have posted the log below, along with a new Hijack This log.

thanks for your patience guys!

Ok...
Please download and open:

Run the "!LOG!.bat" file, wait for the final output (log.txt)
and post the results.

hi, i downloaded and ran the program. windows however kept showing me this message box while i was doing so:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The system file is not suitable for using MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose "Close" to terminate the application.

am i doing something wrong????? i managed to get a log anyway - "close" didn't actually close the application.

The list will produce a small database of files that will match certain criteria.
Ex: read only files, s/h files, last modified date. size, etc.
The filters provided and registry scan should match the
corresponding file(s) listed.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
Unless the file match the entire criteria, it should not be pointed to remove
without attempting to confirm it's nature!
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
At times there could be several (legit) files flagged, and/or duplicate culprit file(s)!
If in doubt, always search the file(s) and properties according to criteria!

The file(s) found should be moved to \FINDnFIX\"junkxxx" Subfolder
