Internet explorer's fabulous vacation. HELP

Okay here is the detail on my problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was traveling recently with my old Compaq E500 running win98. While in my hotel and connecting to the internet via phone modem...I noticed that my wireless card was receiving a signal. I disconnected from my dial up and was able to connect to the internet. My guess is that the office hotel had a wireless router. This seemed to work occasionally, but not always. I subsequently went to an coffee shop that offered free wireless access. I was able to get a very strong signal, but no data was being transmitted. All IE events timed out. Now that I am back home....the same thing is happening. I tried simple fixes like using "goback" but i could not revert to a time long enough previous. I uninstalled and reinstalled the wireless card..no success. Not only does ie not work, but neither does any internet related program.

I figure my problem might be in the network settings. Any ideas how to proceed??

So, a few more details required - when you are at home are you connecting wirelessly, or via the modem? Are you saying that having connected to this wireless LAN you have lost all internet activity, on both dial-up and wireless?

When you are supposidly connected to the internet, in the start/run box type winipconfig & press enter. Tell us what the ip address & gateway settings are for the adaptor that you are using

Thank you for your respons. At home, this laptop is used via wireless card.

When trying to run winipconfig....i get an error message that the file can not be found.

During the trip.....i did use the dial up feature....and then subsequently uninstalled aol when I was attempting to use the wireless feature.

I have no problem getting a good signal from the router.

And strangely enough.....it is now successfully connecting, but since it worked sporadically while traveling...i am not convinced that the problem is now completely corrected.

Does this happen at home or only while travelling?
Are you using a Roaming Dial-up ph number to connect when travelling?

OK - when the connection is up, run winipcfg & write down your ip address, subnet mask, gateway & dns server settings (for the wireless adaptor). Do the same when the connection is down & see if there is a difference.
