Will not accept any other mouse except the old one on it

Postby CherokeeRose » Fri Aug 20, 2004 3:51 am

No mouse is anywhere in the system, yet the old mouse works although it does need to be replaced. Bought a new Belkin mouse but nothing works when installed with the disk that came with it. I am thinking that the guy who built this computer which is an uncle of the friend it was bought from, installed the old mouse in DOS. BUt I do not know how to get into the DOS. I have learned to do a lot of things on my own, but not DOS yet. Could anyone pleasxe help me here. The computer is a Pentium Win98SE. It was a 95, had to reinstall win95, then up grated to 98, then to 98SE. Not my computer, belongs to hubby, and you know how men are when it comes to their toys. LOL

Please help!!!!!!!!

Shut down the pc...unplug old mouse, plug new mouse in.
Re-start your computer....
If you can use the mouse,right-click the MyComputer icon on your Desktop, choose Properties, click the Device Manager Tab,Highlight the Mouse...
Click Update driver...have the Win98SE cd ready for when they ask for it.
Just point to the CD-rom drive that the Win98SE cd is in...EG: E:\Win98

Should install.
Did a CD or Floppy disk come with the new mouse?

Cactus

*EDIT---If the mouse does not work, use the TAB key and Arrow buttons to get around, use the Enter key to open.

I agree with Cactus. Mouse installs should be a no brainer. Once you get used to the TAB, arrow keys and enter, you should be able to navigate just fine.

Stay out of DOS. Its bad for your health. :)

There could be another issue if that computer is as old as I think it is.

You are probably using a [com port to ps/2] adapter so you can connect your new mouse to the com port.

Those mouse adapters ps/2 to com are not all interchangable. The ones that came with logitec mice would only work with logitec.

I haven't installed mouse drivers since dos 6.2--throw the disk away, and remove from add remove programs any mice programs-they're redundant.

I think you have it Icecube. Yeah, I think it was made before the flood  . It is a Belkin, the new mouse. As for the adapter, he said he did not know as it did not have a name on it. I did go in and removed all the mice listed, except the old one. Then tried again to installed the new one, in which the disk says 4.0, but it installs as 1.0.

I am sorry PCguy, I was not clear about myself, I know how to get into DOS, etc, and I found the command for the old mouse, but I am not sure about for the new one. So until I do know for sure, I am not going to try that. There are several commands I do know in DOS, but there are also some I have not learned as of yet. I know what you mean though about it being bad for your health.

And sorry I have not replied earlier, I have been having to manually remove viruses from his computer.

If you have any other sugestions on how to get his new mouse installed, please let me know.

For one, get him a new computer?
