Goodbye Norton

Postby Geekgirl » Tue Aug 03, 2004 3:01 pm

I recently purchsed NOD32 anti-virus as stated in at least 1 of my other posts, and I do have to admit I'm definately glad I got rid of Norton and the other utilites that came with System Works.
You would not believe the editing I had to do to get rid of all of Norton. It was really deep within the registry.
While uninstalling from Add/Remove Programs it froze, but after rebooting I did remove successfully.
Then after every reboot, I was getting errors related to N.A.V., Ya kno looking for files that were'nt there e.g. C:\Program~1\Symantec\Symevnt.386, and also CSHook.VXD.
I did take care of those but was really disappointed with Norton, of all programs, that's suppose to keep your system free of viruses would put so much crap on your machine. It was probably hogging up all my resources. :|

I've noticed a HUGE difference in the speed at boot and shut down.

NOD32 is a great program.
The only thing I didn't like about NOD32 was the particular version I purchased you needed to d/l from the interent. I would of rather had the disc sent to me, but after I d/l it I burnt it just in case I would need to reinstall at a later time.

I would recommend most definately to those looking for a good anti-virus

I agree on Norton.... before i bought it for my last comp i ran a free trial... and of course i then had to get the tweezers out to get all evidence of Norton off my comp before i could install the proper thing :|

I don't remember exactly what i had to do... i followed directions from symantec's site.. but as a trainee geek i remember my heart racing and hands trembling !! hehe.... i had to trust what i read because i had no understanding of where i was going on my comp and what i was doing. Norton was literally sprinkled everywhere...

I'm running a free trial of McAfee at mo... came ready installed on my new comp... *alarm bells ring* hehe..... BUT it has caught a trojan already... and it's the same trojan Norton failed to find on my old comp... i had to run Housecall to find it.. many moons ago lol

My old computer is offline now (poor Nobby :( ) and i will uninstall Norton just to see what happens.... it will be very interesting... there was such strange stuff happening with Nobby it started to freak me out... hence the birth of Baby Nobs.. :) .... i bet it was all caused by Norton.

hmmmm Lilpink can go back to sleep now lolz *zzzzzzzzz*... jus woke up to sound off hehe

I've always supported Norton Anti-Virus in the past, but recently I too was infected with Trojans that Norton had missed. Its becoming too often I see the HJT logs coming in with viruses and Trojans and they also use Norton.... hmmm somethings not right there.

Being a computer repair technician, I feel I need to offer my customers the best protection out there that I kno. How can I promote Norton and then have to try to explain to them how they got infected? I would rather not. Doesn't make me look good and besides how do I kno how it got past. If I don't have the answers they will go elsewhere to find them.

Just because Symantec is the largest known anti virus company, doesn't mean they are the best.

Thats a personal opinion

Here's some impressive info, please if your serious about changing your anti-virus program, research your choices.....

For more than six years, NOD32 remains the only antivirus system in the world that has not missed any 'In the Wild' virus in the prestigious tests performed by the international magazine - Virus Bulletin. Out of the 25 antivirus products tested on Windows XP platform, NOD32 was one of the 3 that have achieved a clean sweep detecting all the viruses in all the test sets in both on-demand and on-access tests without any false alarm. However, NOD32's scanning rate of the executable files was more than 3.8 times higher than the second best product and 21 times higher than the third of the products with 100% detection rate.

NOD32 Antivirus System provides well balanced, state-of-the-art protection against threats endangering your PC and enterprise systems running various platforms from Microsoft Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT / 2000 / 2003 / XP, through a number of UNIX/Linux, Novell, MS DOS operating systems to Microsoft Exchange Server, Lotus Domino and other mail servers.
Viruses, worms, trojans and other malware are kept out of striking distance of your valuable data. Advanced detection methods implemented in the software even provide protection against the future threats from most of the new worms and viruses.
The fourth generation of the NOD32 Antivirus System features a fully integrated software suite characterized by an unprecedented detection track record, the fastest scanning rates and extremely low utilization of system resources...

I could go on and on but I'm sure you get the picture about this program.

...and Restek, I wish I were getting commission
