236 New Spies in 40 seconds of connectivity

Postby CanadianTek » Mon Aug 02, 2004 5:02 am

Hey Folks..

spent a couple hours running Ad-aware 6.181 R334 and Spybot 1.3 and Bazooka.. cleaning up 289 spies..

Installed and ran AVG.. found.. 35 spies.. healed 14 - virus vaulted 21 others

All 4 said .. "now clean :) "

connected to the net for 40 seconds to get .. ad-aware update

235 more spies..

vx2, dyfuca, webhancer, clear search, tvmedia, sah agent, blazefind, statblast, lycos side search..

RAN ad-aware and spybot again..

now says clear.. but not taking any chances of connecting to the net until you pro's give the nod..

Been trying to be good about not hassling ya..

getting to the point i recognize some of the nasties myself..

BUT.. this is the best i can do.. for now.. is educated guessing

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

wsaupdater.exe
PowerReg Scheduler.exe
Tvm.exe

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Go to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and remove the following if they are there:

wsaupdater
TV Media
PowerReg Scheduler

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\Program Files\TV Media\Tvm.exe
C:\Program Files\TV Media\TvmBho.dll
C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and reboot.

Run HJT again and Post a new logfile.

Update for you Cactus

Postby CanadianTek » Mon Aug 02, 2004 7:43 pm

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP....

just a couple footnotes.. and the updated hjt log you requested

1) the windows media player always popped up on top..
2) upon following your instructions and rebooting...

(i took out the entire tv media folder as it contained tvm.exe, tvmbho.dll and tvmcore.exe? and your instructions didnt cover the core program figured time to remove the source too..if it causes the fires to start)

on first reboot...

i got... error message on post...

"Windows cannot find c:\program' make sure you type the name in correctly..."

well i had not typed anything in so we know it was coming from

win.ini
sys.ini
start up progs
or registry

it may have been a by-product of me uninstalling..

WINDOWS SA in the add remove programs..

even though that was not in your instructions.. i know from digging in this system for the 2 hours yesterday that.. Windows SA was assoiciated with SAHagent or wsaupdater..or tvm (that is a stretch first two thoughts are probably more accurate but i guessing)

i also took out tv media from add/remove software.. and either tvm or windows sa...tried to launch to the net to contact uninstall processes but since net was disconnected.. - it failed and said it would clean out on next reboot.. - i have my suspicions that one of these progs was not going to visit an uninstall procedure but yet another download a fresh copy proceedure - aptly called uninstall.. as that was part of url it had tried to get to

that ..."windows cannot find " message may have been something that was still in memory.. or registry but now that files and reg entries are stripped, it cant .. what ever was trying to run - cant find it.

i also noted this line here... from your remove/suggestions/instructions..

and thougth.. hmmm maybe there is something in system.ini but i didnt see anything suspicious

f2-reg:system.ini:userinit=c:\windows\systeme32\wsaupdater.exe

although the line had been terminated in reg, and file wsaupdater.exe had been deleted.. i did go back and check sys.ini file just to make sure - there were no references to wsaupdater...

on reboot again.. i found the "windows cannot find c:\program' " had gone away... AND that .. wmp did not launch as per always.,

so my conclusions there would be..

obviously.. one of the 13 lines in registry, or the nature of one of the files tvm tvm bho.dll or wsaupdater.exe must us wmplayer as a host file.. ??

if this info helps you in your analysis.. or further understand the characteristics of these spies great

AGAIN I THANK YOU .. and (brad and others who have helped me along the way here) - hope to get some kind of donation off to you soon.. and i guess more importantly.. if i can get trained to do this for other guests on here., then that helps lighten the load for all...

I notice there is still an R3 ... url hook to tvm (file missing)

even though i did remove it the last time around as per instructions..

but i left it there - awaiting further instructions from you..

i understand these spies have camilean - like tendencies.. (ok ok, i cant spell) - where you cut off one leg.. and a dif registry entry contacts mother server to seek new appendages or replacements..

..again.. thanx ..any help .. greatly appreciated

(and the notify me when a reply is posted is not working.. unless hotmail has turned the juice up on junkmail but.. that box seems empty too)

Good work CanadianTek!! We're all learning.... :)

Even after you removing what you did,the entry still appears in your HJT log?

If you remove this trojan file, wsaupdater.exe and don't correct the registry entry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Currentversion\Winlogon

UserInit=c:\windows\system32\wsaupdater.exe,

Should be:

UserInit=c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

(the comma is supposed to be there)
