USB driving me round the twist

O.K here goes

I'm using win 98 and have just bought a Canon i550 for my printing needs.
I have connected it to one of my usb ports the other port is used for my Motorola 4200 cable modem.

My modem is always connected so when i boot up my pc i can browse straight away, the problem comes when i get to a page i want to print. On goes the printer no problem, and the page prints. But from then my connection to the net is disabled. I become connected again if i turn the printer off and wait a couple of minutes but this is just inconvenient.

The problem doesnt exist if i boot up my computer with the printer on, but i dont always print stuff when i'm online.

Theres no conflicts in device manager, they both work just not in harmony.

The latest drivers for printer and modem are installed, could some one point me in the right direction.

Just some random bits.

Is it 98 or 98SE? And have you fully updated your OS? And did you check your power settings to see if anything is set to turn off?

You could leave the printer turned on, I do. You could also connect your Modem with a Lan (Cat5) cable instead of USB.

Go into device manager and write down all the devices in the ports section, then go to the usb and write down all listings in that section.

Boot up in safe mode and go to device manager and delete items in those two areas that were not visible in regular mode.

Its a good trick for removing items that have been removed from the computer but are still there behind the scenes

You probably switched the two usb cables and Windows 98 remembers both settings.
