Vista and your internet!!!

Postby Axelation » Thu Jul 05, 2007 2:54 pm

I have recently run across some problems with Vista in my line of work. (Cable Internet Technician) First issue was compatibility issues with a generic RealTek PCI Network Card. The drivers will load, and the PC will show everything is fine, but when you do a speed test, you would get 500-1000k maximum on your download speed. This happened to a customer of mine that had his modem provisioned at 9Mb.

The second issue I have seen is with the new Avast software that "claims" to be compatible with Vista. Well it does load, and it does protect the PC, but it also blocks the user from the internet entirely and only works in random spurts.

Both issues were within a week of each other.

So be warned....Just because it says Vista compatible, it doesn't mean it is.

Vista is Dumpster friendly. You can downgrade to XP for free. Maybe it will disappear as fast Millennium did. It'a a real resource hog. Bloatware at the highest level.

None of the old software runs on it. You have to buy the new stuff and a lot of it of it comes with a yearly renewal contract.

i think Vista is the best thing that ever happened to open source!!! LOL With this kind of crap being produced, it is only a matter of time before you start seeing more Linux boxes!

I have to disagree..

Point 1.. if you have a Cable or ADSL line running at 9Mb, the maximum throughput you would achieve is around 1000KB/second. Therefore, the speed reported by the network card seem perfectly appropriate.

If they were only receiving those speeds across a LAN network running at 100Mb, ten I would accept that the performance was detrimental.

Point 2.. it is unfair to blame an operating system because a software manufacturer claims compatibility and fails to deliver.

Point 3.. Vista is the best effort MS have made at an OS release since win 95a. True, as with all previous operating systems, it takes too much away from the user and makes thigs complicated in the process. But from a technical perspective, the memory addressing and management is much improved over XP. MS have for once listened to many of the gripes that people had regarding the location of options and programs,

The only real gripe I have with Vista is microsofts innovative profit increasing categorisation system. 4 versions(Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate), 3 EULA's (OEM, Full, Upgrade), 2 CPU's (32bit & 64bit). making a total of 24 different flavours. no longer can you buy one OS and install it on all your machines (which may be technically breaching the EULA, but is something that anyone with more than one PC does) is no longer as simple as it was.

If MS had released just the ultimate version, in OEM and Retail/Upgrade versions, for 64 OR 32bit at the price of the current retail package, it would have probably hurt the open source scene a great deal.

the benefits quoted to open source are not from the OS itself, because that is good enough to sway novice and intermediate users away from Linux. It is microsofts marekting strategy that benefits the *nix community.

Well who knows? Dell going to Ubuntu on some of its laptops seems to be a small indication that Vista is not up to par in some areas.

Oh indeed.. there is still a lot of work to be done on Vista yet.. as with every OS since 95.. an incomplete system is released.. The internet has turned the general public into a paying for the privelige beta/RC testing platform.. We pay them to try their incomplete OS and tell them what's wrong with it.. lol

I usually wait until at least SP1 if not SP2 before I upgrade to an OS.. but having gotten Vista free on my latest laptop, I have to say I'm more impressed than I've been since windows 2000 Professional was released.

i think vista looks rather nice, but i think the compatabilty problem is my biggest worry. i love playing old games, and if some games arent going to work thats a problem.
I cant find my copy of postal 2 :( and i imagine games like that wont run. But i really wanna find my copy lol.

i remember when i was younger i had a copy of the game men in black, which wasnt actually that bad. well we upgraded from 95 i think, and the game wouldnt run on anything other than 95, so the game became useless.

So thats my worry. + all the things you guys are saying!
