Whenever I reboot, two icons pop up. The initial one says WJV ERROR--Error: could not execute main: the system cannot find the specified file. The second icon says Would you like to view available updates for your "Powered By Sonic" products?

Can someone tell me what a WJV Error is, and what file it's looking for that it can't find? And, I am wholly unaware of any products I have that are powered by Sonic, much less available updates to these products. Is this a piece of spyware? How can I remove this icon upon rebooting?

Download / Install / Update / and run: .
Also, update and run your Anti-Virus Program.

Try running SpyBot as suggested. It finds thing Ad-aware doesn't.
If you go to Start / Run / Type MSCONFIG Hit "Enter" / Click on Startup Tab what's listed?

I downloaded and ran SpyBot, and found it removed 75 items that Ad-aware didn't catch. The first icon no longer reappears upon rebooting, but now I get this one:

Unable to find (I think it says) Backweb Application ID "137903" (that part is correct).

The "Powered By Sonic" is still popping up, a few minutes after reboot.

There seems to be a ton of stuff listed in the Startup tab when I run the msconfig thing. Is there a way to copy and paste that, so I can show it here?

Sounds like you've got too much stuff starting. I'd suggest that you download / install / and run . Then copy and paste it's Log file here.

First of all I would suggest that you download
This little program will fix all your topfivesearch.com changes.

After you have ran the CWShredder.exe
Rerun HiJackThis again and remove this line:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Recguard] C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\RECGUARD.EXE

Now rescan with AdAware again, check for updates of the reference file by using the "web update". Make sure the following settings are made and are Green.
From main window : Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan". Then Click "Use custom scanning options > Customize" and have these options on:, "Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files".

Let us know if this fixes all your problems.

Holy crap you guys gave me a lot of homework.

I followed everything, I think, to the letter. The difference now is the Operating System asks me which program I want to run, before it automatically goes to Windows XP. And the Backweb error message still pops up.

I (we) did get rid of the Powered by Sonic thing, though.......

When the computer first reboots, the screen is black, as if in DOS, and it says “Please select the Operating System to Start.” XP is already selected, and it automatically defaults to that.

Upon Reboot, once again I get the message RUNNER EROR, and it says “Invalid Backweb Application id “137903”. I right-clicked on it, and it appears to have something to do with this “nVIDIA” function/program mentioned earlier in this thread. But I’m not exactly sure what it does, or what to uncheck to make the error message go away upon reboot.

I downloaded the CWShredder and ran that, then did Hijack This and clicked on all the ones I could find—but I couldn’t find all the option you guys told me to delete, or deselect in msconfig

Here is the current Hijack This log—still seems like a lot of stuff. What am I missing…?
