Yahoo homepage looks suspicious

Postby freelobotomy » Sun Mar 19, 2006 2:53 am

My wife's laptop started looking very suspect today. Yahoo home page looks hijacked. How could this happen? I'm positive she doesn't go to questionable sites. Take a look and once again, thanks for your help.

There are a number of entries referring to Synapse, Synapse Medical and Neoteris all look to be related.
I am asumming that this is something that you have installed if not let me know and we'll address that next.

Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:
If the below is not your start page then have HiJackThis Fix it.
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.averatec.com

Otherwise you log looks clean.

What make you think Yahoo is hijacked?

Hey Gecko, thanks for the quick reply. My wife is a Doctor and Synapse is a program we installed. The Yahoo homepage on this laptop looks different than the the one on my desktop in the other room. I see over-lapping text and South Park references all over the home page. It looks very similiar to a hijacked browser you helped me fix on a friends' machine about 3 weeks ago. Of course I ran ad-aware & spybot before I posted but only minor data mining cookies were found & removed. I could try to post a screen shot of the home page if you need it. I just can't remeber how to take a screen shot and save it to post here. Let me know how & what you need. Fixed what you mentioned (it is an Averatec laptop) but it's still not the same Yahoo home page as my desktop. In the upper right hand corner of the suspected hijacked home page it says "Yahoo is testing a new home page. Send feedback" which is a link I believe may compromise this sytem. I saw that same link on my buddy's system mentioned above.

Hi freelobotomy,
Now that I know your wife is a Doctor you nick name takes on a whole new meaning :)

While in Internet Explorer select “Tools” > “Internet Options” > General tab
click the Clear history button, the Delete files button and the Delete cookies button.
Close Internet Explorer and then restart it see if that clears the Yahoo home page.

The other thing to check is to make sure that the address bar actually says http://www.yahoo.com.

If the address bar is not showing select “View” > “Toolbars” click Address bar
Now do it again but uncheck “Lock the Toolbars” now drag the Address bar down and it will become visible.
