One site won't load - except through SSL?

Postby crookedsixpence » Sun Jun 26, 2005 8:29 pm

Hi, guys and gals. I'm new (*waves*) and soon to be bald as I've been pulling my hair out in frustration for a couple of days! Here's the problem. DeviantArt.com is an important site for me as it generates work, which is a good thing. But a couple of days ago, I found I was suddenly unable to get to DeviantArt ...which is a bad thing! I *am* able to get to the site from my laptop on the same connection, so it must be my PC.

I called my ISP to see if they had any ideas. They suggested I:

*Go to DeviantArt's IP address. Didn't work.
*Rename my HOSTS file. Didn't work.
*Something else I can't remember, but whatever it was, it didn't work.

And then they reluctantly suggested I set my PC to an earlier restore point. This also did not work.

A moment ago, a friend told me to try going to the site through MegaProxy.com (which allows you to browse the web through an SSL connection) and...and...it WORKED! That same friend just now told me to try flushing my DNS, but...that didn't work. :(

So, basically, on THIS computer, I'm only able to get to DeviantArt.com via SSL, and the above is everything I've tried to get around this. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this? And if this is in the wrong section, I do apologize.

Welcome crookedsixpence,

You said that you tried http://69.28.181.43 and it didn’t work.

My guess would be some form of spyware has infected your system.
Please download , unzip it to it's own folder and not a temp folder.
Start HijackThis and select 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'
Now post the contents of the logfile back into this thread.

Your log file is clean. I am impressed. :)

Can I ask what happens when you try to go to deviantart?

Well, it *was* just telling me that the page couldn't be found, and the request was timing out when I tried to ping it. Curiously enough, it began working again, today. I haven't the foggiest idea what happened or why it began to work, but thank goodness! Anyway, thanks for the help, all!
