Hard drive activity

Postby ronz28 » Tue Aug 03, 2004 3:00 pm

Hi, I can't find any info on this problem I'm having. My mouse will freeze about once a second and I've noticed that during this time, my HD light comes on exactly when the freeze happens. It appears to occur at random and for a random amount of time, as well. I am adamant about keeping my computer clean and in tip-top shape. I run SpyBot, Ad-Aware, Norton AV, ZoneAlarm and defrag regularly. There are no services running that shouldn't be, and no app is present during these times. I haven't been able to pin point when or why it happens. It is very frustrating, especially since I'm an avid gamer. My computer is an HP Pavilion 762n: 2.26P4, 768MB RAM, Radeon 9000 vid card and I'm running XP Home with all updates. Recently, I tried turning off Indexing service but the problem is still there. Any ideas?

Have you tired another mouse???

Its possible you have been hijacked or even hacked....if your getting h.d.d activity and your not doing anything to make the drive work its possible someone else is.
Please Download and post a logfile.

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

We will let our moderators look at your log just to make sure your system is clean.

Hijackthis log

Postby ronz28 » Tue Aug 03, 2004 3:26 pm

OK, here's the log. Strange, I couldn't connect to many of the hijackthis download sites, including the hyperlink u gave me, and my problem occurred after every "page cannot be displayed" error. I finally got it direct from the author. Anyway, have at it, thx.

Well there is a newer version out 1.98.1 please try to download again

Please Download the newer version of and post a new logfile.

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents,as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

**(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)**

I noticed that between posting with HJT 1.98 and the new 1.98.1 that you eliminated "My Web Search".
Are you sure that didn't clear you up?
If you didn't intensionally get rid of it I'll include the fix:

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

mwsoemon.exe

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
(This would also include the “GoBack” Program if it is installed.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\2.bin\mwsoemon.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{E53249EC-26A5-4A85-B568-1FF942E4D172}: NameServer = 168.126.63.1 168.126.63.2

Go to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and remove the following if they are there:

MYWEBSEARCH

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBSEARCH

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and reboot.

Yes I did remove that search bar, however it was a recent voluntary install and my problem dates back long before it was present on my computer. I've also found that it doesn't matter if I'm connected to the internet or not, my HD will still occasionally flash about once a second freezing everything for that time. I will proceed with your recommendation, though and post the new HJT log in about 8-9 hours. Thx.

Log looks clean. Try Ctrl/Alt/Del and Click the "Processes" Tab.
Watch the activity. Notice what's active when the "freeze" happens. It sounds like it could be your Norton.

OK, I just checked processes in Task Manager. System Idle is consuming 98-99% with explorer and taskmanager taking some occassional CPU cycles of 1-2%. Nothing else apparent.

I forgot to add that I checked when it was acting up, not during a normal time.

Temporarily, disable all your Norton Utilities. Watch for the problem to surface. This will help narrow it down.

I found 2 processes associated with NAV, but could not end the process "navapsvc.exe" Also, it might be too early to tell, but I have not had the problem since turning auto-protect off and ending the one service. If this does turn out to be the problem, what is wrong with my Norton?

Well wait it out. If it is the problem, I'd go to Symantic for help. I quit using Norton 5 yrs. ago.
