system clock can’t be backdated

Postby patkim » Fri Jun 25, 2004 1:09 pm

I am a little surprised to find that my system clock can’t be backdated. It simply resets to the original value immediately after clicking ‘Apply’ or ‘Ok’. It’s XP Pro, stand-alone PC and I log in with administrator account.
I can however set it to a future date, but then again from that point it can’t be backdated!!
It works from within BIOS setup or when booted to DOS, but from XP somehow it does not.
Norton scan has not detected any virus; even spy ware search does not indicate anything. What could be going wrong here?
Thanks…

If you "Right Click" on the Clock and choose "Adjust Date/Time" / Internet Time Tab is the box next to "Automatically syncronize with Internet time server" checked?

Yes..it was checked. Drop down list mentions time.windows.com and time.nist.gov as servers. Further there's message that says...An error occured while Windows was synchronizing.

I unchecked that, even disabled the Windows Time service..but still it does not allow to backdate.

Have you rebooted since you unchecked it?
Try resetting it in the Bios now.

I can set it to any date in BIOS but even after rebooting I still can’t backdate from within XP. Could it be that some shareware program has some hidden service or some such thing running!

Could be. Why not try this:
If you're still having problems:
Download / install / and Update: . Now Run it and post a copy of the Log File here.
**(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)**
