Which CPU is best for gaming?

Postby brodyhooperquint » Fri Jan 16, 2004 2:18 pm

Hi...Hope this question is in the right place...apologies to the moderator if it is'nt.

I am building a second computer solely for gaming and I was wondering if any of you fellow gaming guys could tell me which is the best processor for gaming?...pentium? athlon?
Would be very interested in other people's specs and how they are finding their performance with them.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks from Colin

My vote goes to athlon xp.Im not a hardcore gamer but i do like FPS games like unreal and ghost recon. My athlon XP 2000+ in conjunction with a Nvidia Gforce 4 mx 440se 128 meg Vid card hasnt let me down yet.

yeah athlons if i'm not mistaken(i might be) do 4 processes per cycle while pentiums do 1. Again i haven't thought about things like that for a while so it may have changed or i may be wrong. I do know that Athlons are known to outperform pentiums running about 1 Ghz faster than the athlon. And their cheaper and more versatile(any athlon motherboard will hold an 800Mhz all the way to 2.4 or 2.6 whatever their current max is)
And if you can afford performance by an athlon 64 their 64bit processor gets rid of the a bottle neck in the cpu and has 1 MB of onchip cache

P4 for me - however it is quite a bit more expensive than the athlon, so you could probably buy a better spec'd athlon for the same money :D
