Need help with game called 'Lighthouse'

I have started a PC game called 'Lighthouse' by Sierra. Has anyone ever played it before? If so please give me your advice! I have gotten as far as getting into the "mini-sub" but can't dissengage from the big Sub! I have been following a "walkthrough" but I am stuck. It says to push the second lever first, to close the hatch and that works fine. But when I go to push the other lever it will not move!
It's a really good game but unless you guy's can give me a tip or two, I will not be able to finish the game.
