List Making Software

Hello. Well, i have about 400 files which i would very much like to make a list of. I mean, a single word document with all the file names listed in order.
Is there a program to do this? I have spent the last hour or so putting them all in order etc, and i do not want to copy and paste all the file names into a file.

I only want to make the list as it is easier to look through a word document than the actual files.

Sorry man, i've looked for something along those lines myself and never found anything satisfying. I wound up using winamp to make a list of my mp3's but never got anything past that.

This is going to be very painful then!

I have spent a good while sorting out the pc, I’m going to do a clean install of xp (don’t want to go to vista to be honest) and keeping all my music, movies, documents. Luckily I have more than enough room across my two spare drives to keep it all.

Is there anyway to save program files or games rather than re-installing them all? I’m more concerned with games as they have all been put in the loft.

For the program files, the actual files can be kept but its the registry files that will drive you nuts. Its theoretically possible but the word "pain" wont quite cover it. Move your save game files and get ready to climb in the loft, your gonna find yourself up there sooner or later

I am backing up all the game files (like counter strike and hl2, just so i dont have to install them again, you can add them into the steam folder im sure).

I am going to make a back up of the registry just incase ive lost any cds or anything.

I will post my news on how the clean install goes, im probally going to invest in some new sticks of ram, just a pack of 4 gig, its getting really cheap and i wouldnt mind just a lil upgrade.

I read your other post, thats a nice little upgrade. The extra cooling wasnt needed for you cpu but you will be glad you added it if/when you get your video upgraded. The 80X80 fan behing the mobo/cpu wont be needed though, just more noise and power drain without any benefit.

Holidays went well, thanks so much for asking. Kids are satisfied, family is well. My brother will be making it here tomorrow (Friday-26th) so im looking forward to that. Havent been working at all, we close down for about 2 weeks. I'll be back at work on the 29th. Im ready to go back too, been sittin around too long!

As for the list making...easiest way I found, is from a linux live cd...open a terminal and do:

cd /directory containing files/

ls > /directory you want to save to/mylist.txt

or you can do as .doc or whatever you want.

It will do it fast.

For listing options, do: man ls command or ls --help.

i diddnt ask for anything from my parents, but they gave me a bit of money, ive put it in the bank.

I have saved up from my summer job more than enough for a nice BIG tele, but i am waiting for the sales, or even waiting until i have finished uni (May).

I got some pretty cool presents from the gf, but other than that it was just nice to spend time with close family

Hi Venny

If you are using XP open up a command prompt window. Clear to a C:\ prompt

type in dir [space]

hit the tab key until you get to the directory you want to copy and hit enter. every time you hit the tab key it will scroll to the next directory. Hitting enter locks that directory as a sub. So if the directory is nested, after hitting enter do a dir [space] and tab until you get to the next part of the sub directory. It's easier than typing the whole thing out, DOS doesn't see the files the way windows does.

Like mine was music from the c:\music prompt type in DIR C:\MUSIC\ /S >C:\Music\Music.txt

Normally a dir prints to the screen the > gives you the option of where to print it to.This prints to a file called Music.txt

At this point you can either open it in excel and clean it up deleting the fields you don't want, or open it in word.

I wrote a folder listing program years ago for just this type of thing.
It can create a list of the files in the folder shown in the window or it can append the list to add content.
