Windows Media Player not working

For some reason windows media player stopped working. one day it worked, the next it didn’t.

i tried all the usual, uninstall (or roll back as it were) and wmp10 didn’t work. i tried installing wmp9 but it wouldn’t let me as it said a later version was still on, and i didn’t know how to get rid of wmp10.


i did some research about it on the net and came across this


i think this is what i need to do to fix the problem but i dont really know how to do it.

Method 1: Reregister Jscript.dll
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then click OK.
3. Click OK.

i tried that and it did not register, i cannot do the next part

If the file does not register as expected, or if you receive an error message, the system file may be missing or damaged. To extract the missing file in Windows XP, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. Click Expand File.
4. In the File to restore box, type the name of the file that you want to restore.
5. In the Restore from box, type the path of the Windows XP .cab file where you want to restore the file, or click Browse From to locate the Windows XP .cab file.

Note The Windows XP .cab files are stored in the I386 folder on the Windows XP CD.
6. In the Save file in box, type the path where you want to extract the new file, or click Browse To to locate the folder that you want.
7. Click Expand.
8. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

anyone have a clue?

Not the answer you're after, but I'd say move to winamp. I started getting issues with media player for no reason at all. mainly that it would forget it's library and playlist.

Moved to winamp and never looked back. Still, sorry about the problem and that I couldn't help.

Try downloading and installing the Windows Script 5.7 for Windows XP


This download installs Microsoft® Windows® Script containing Visual Basic® Script Edition (VBScript.) Version 5.7, JScript® Version 5.7, Windows Script Components, Windows Script Host 5.7, and Windows Script Runtime Version 5.7.

That could repair your media player and a lot of other things as well

gecko i get an error.

it says

Windows Script Setup Error
Setup has detected that the service pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying.

There is no need to install this update.


I really do want to fix this.

As to psymon, ive been trying lots of differnt ones, real player, winamp is giong ok atm.

What version is your jscript.dll?

Have you tried the second part of that fix:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{f414c260-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb558}\In procServer32

The (Default) value data should contain the following value:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\JSCRIPT.DLL

If it does not, double-click Default, type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\JSCRIPT.DLL in the Value data box, and then click OK.
4. The ThreadingModel value data should contain the following value:
Both

If it does not, double-click ThreadingModel, and then type Both in the Value data box.
5. Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{f414c261-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb558}\In procServer32
6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to edit this key, and then go to step 7.
7. Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{f414c262-6ac0-11cf-b6d1-00aa00bbbb558}\In procServer32
8. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to edit this key, and then go to step 9.
9. Exit Registry Editor and reboot.

Hey gecko, yea i had a look and i couldnt do it. i dont have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\

its not there. maybe thats the problem then? lol

Well if you really cannot find that registry key then that would answer everything, there is a lot inside of that Key!
You could give windows Restore a try and restore your system to a date before all this happened.
Start > All programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore
Make sure you have your important files backup up to a cd or flash drive before you do this. I know MS says it won't delete any new created file but I've seen people loose file from restoring.

Remember there is a chance that the spyware infection will come back, so disconnect it from any network and run a full system scan in safe mode.

my system restore doesnt work, i think i need to disable it and boot up and enable it. but effectivly, i cannot restore back to before.


just to show im not being silly (unless i am).

is there another way to get it back?

i could try restoring these



but im pretty sure i only installed regcure after media player stopped working (i think it was the reason i got it).

i could restore the earliest one, but i think it will bring back spyware.

i also had a look at the spybot recovery part, none of the deleted keys are the one we are looking for. i have no idea how this key went missing then.

ok, ive just realised im an idiot. i do have that key, but not all of it, thats why it diddnt show up on my search

I dont have any of those three keys mentioned, and i dont really understand what i need to do.

thanks gecko, i added it and rebooted. wmp still gives same error, should i now try the first part of the solution? then maybe to reinstalling media player?

Go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ then right click on jscript.dll and select properties.
Next click the Version tab and there will be your version.
