Video Compression

I need help with Compressing Video I have taken on my still Camera,
The Camera is a Canon Powershot A550 and the video is in AVI format.
The quality is ok for my purpose but the problem is that 7 mins of video is taking up around 600 mb on my PC. I know from experience that 7 mins of AVI should not take up any more than 50 MB, Can anyone reccomend a program that will compress this to a manageable size.
