Dropping Connection

I swear I have the most difficult computers around. My cable modem is able to use a usb(2) connection or a network card connection to pass that sweet, sweet bandwidth to my computers. When I use the usb connection, the internet works fine. However when I use the the ethernet cable to connect to either of my computers I only have internet connection for 5 mintues or less, then the connection just drops. The only way for me to regain connection is to power cycle the computer and the modem. I would assume that it has something to do with the ethernet cards I have installed, but I have 2 different cards in my computers, one of them being a brand new card. This happens to both computers. Please tell me there is a solution to this?

Why do you switch back and forth between Nic and USB?

What operating system are you using?

USB works great, but if you plug it into a different port each time, you could have some serious issues.

Ideally I'd like to use Nic instead of USB because I have 2 PCs and the switch i would like to use will only handle Nic. However when I use it, without fail, my connection drops. USB will only service one computer at a time. I am set up on XP pro right now.

When you say your connection will only handle one computer, with the problem you describe I think you need a router to hook up to your cable or DSL service.

That way, you can share the connection without it dropping.

I plan on giving that a shot within the next couple of days. I'll let you know what happens.

Hooked up my two computers to a router last night. For the couple of hours I was awake after hooking them up the connection was solid. However when I woke up this morning, 5 hours later, neither of the computers would hold a connection for more than a couple of minutes.

Try this also, I should have thought of it earlier :|

go to start-->run and type in cmd

then from the comand prompt type ipconfig /release_all

Then type in ipconfig /renew_all

there is a space between the g /
