networking the new usb modem...

heres my configuration
Modem into my machine's usb, cat 5 from my machine to switch, cat5 from switch to wife's machine. Pretty simple network.

as long as my nic is enabled OR a cable is plugged in it, my internet disconnects every 5 minutes. Internet is basicly dial up on steroids, modem dials in with user/pass. It disconnects and has to redial. Status log shows 95% of the time it disconnects at 5 minutes 2 seconds, occasionally somewhere in 4 seconds and 6 seconds.

I thought is was my onboard nvidia nic causing the problem but i threw in a older motorola card and have the same problem. If i unplug the cable or disable the nic i stay online. ISP tells me that i cant network it without buying a friggin $200 3g router and i just refuse to accept that. My cell phone company told me i couldnt bluetooth internet over to my pc and i've been using it for months until i bought this modem. Theres bound to be something im missing.

I've been working on it for a couple days now and read that disabling the checksum offload may help and infact it did for 2 days and went right back to disconnecting again. Nothing i've done since then has made a difference.

i think i found it. I had to go in the wife's machine and disable checksum offload, segmentation offload and set the speed to 100 full duplex only. Its been connected for 9 hours after doing so.

I dont really understand why i had to do that though

I wish I could help man, I can imagine that this is very annoying for you.

when i came to uni the router that was here didn’t work, i had to buy a rather expensive ADSL wireless router, which i guess would have probably cost almost $200. But that made our internet work.

Is that the next step then? $200 blown on a new router :(

As far as i can tell, im out of options. I found the same router on ebay for $140 so im considering it. Im not a big ebay fan but it might save me a few dollars this round.

liljim,

I would suspect that it has something to do with windows ICS protocols, that is causing the disconnect problem.

Wouldn't this router work for you?

Thats the right type Gecko but unfortunately it doesnt support my modem. I have a pantech um175 modem that so far only a hand full of the 3g routers support. Cyfre and cradlepoint support it but i havent found any others yet.

I removed the switch and tried a crossover cable from one machine to the other and still no go. I surrendered and ordered a CradlePoint MBR-1000 router.

Lil Jim

I remember back to dial up, and if memory serves me right, if you right click on the dial up icon there is a setting that defaults to disconnect after 5 minutes of inactivity. You had to change it to never.

This was to keep you from running your bill up when we use to pay by the minute.

Indeed, that was actually the first thing i checked. It was set to 20 minutes and i of course set it to never but still no go. It only does it with ICS, no probs with just my machine. Im blown away, router will be here 03/03 and i'll see if that does it.

I appreciate the thought Icecube, even if the router gets me straight i'd still like to figure this one out.
