Ram upgrade

Hey people.

Well I want to upgrade my ram, but I don’t really remember what I need (very noobish I know). I am going to go ahead and order a few other bits and just order my ram secondly.

I am buying a new PSU , and a new hard drive . Both lovely I think you will agree, and should make for a much nicer system. And as I am going that I figure why not upgrade the ram, and overclock the cpu a bit more.

But I don’t know what to look for. I don’t want to break my bank account with the ram but I want 4gig and I want uprated ram for easier overclocking.

Hopefully jim you can help me.

Thanks for any help.

3 things .... no 4.

1. What's wrong with your current RAM? I know your bought some pretty good stuff not so long ago, so I doubt you'll notice a difference if you get 'faster' stuff.

2. Unless you change to a 64bit OS, since I know you're running XP on 32 bit, you'll only see 4GB - the memory of your GPU. what was it, X1950? 512MB? so you'll only see 3.5 out of that 4.

3. I told you not to get a cheap PSU in the first place :P

4. Holy hard drive batman! you really need a whole TB? your current one filling up? didn't you buy half a TB or something recently?!?

In terms of help with the RAM, the best I can do is say look for the mobo handbook or information on the official website. that'll give you the types of RAM and frequency it was designed to handle. Now that I think about, I recall you have the same Mobo as I got for my parents PC, and that's got 2 DDR2 slots and 2 DDR3 slots, so you may be able to get some good DDR3 stuff. Mind though, it's expensive. the cheapest 4GB they've got is and you have 2GB of DDR2 from the same make, no?

Thanks for your helpful tips mate lol!

My ram is fine, i want to overclock my cpu more, and my ram isnt capable of going very far. If you buy uprated ram it makes overclocking much easier. And i know i will only be able to see 3.5 gigs of ram but thats more than what i have :D
And ram is cheap atm so its a good time (killing two birds with one stone kind of thing).

And yes... lol my 500gig hard drive is full! Just this morning i had to clear some more things from it which i dont like doing. The whole point i have my pc is so i can have everything i want on it, and as that drive is only 80 quid i thought snap. I was going to get a 750gig drive which was like 76 pounds, then for 82 i found 1TB there was no competition.
As of current this pc has 651 gigs, and i have about 30 gig free stretched over both drives. And thats only because i cleared a chunk earlier. 1TB should last me ages.

And doesn’t that psu look lovely :D
Again, there’s nothing really wrong with mine (that i know of for sure) sometimes the pc wont boot up which i am putting down to the psu, so i guess it does need to go. But that psu has lasted me like 2+ years and for 30 pounds or whatever its done a good job. But with the added hard drive and a new gpu in the future i thought whilst i have some money i will upgrade.

Hey venney, if you want to upgrade the memory then go for it but dont buy it for just overclocking ability. If i remember right, we overclocked the hell out of your chip and even with faster memory i dont think you will get much more out of it. 1 or 2 hundred megahertz wont show you alot of extra performance. Certainly not worth the extra stress.

Heres a good rule of thumb

"If it aint broke, dont fix it".

HDD and PSU look great, i need another hdd myself. I have just over 650 gigs of storage internally that almost full.

:( I feel like I'm not doing something right now. only 146GB out of 232GB used here.
