Slow boot up

All computer hardware support

Slow boot up

Postby and4545 » Wed May 23, 2007 12:12 pm

Hi, I have been having this problem for a while now.

The PC can take up to 10/15 mins to boot-up fully. At first I thought it might be the Graphics card as I get the initial windows XP screen then all goes blank, but have tried a different one with the same result.

This morning I got this message in IE7:

The instruction at "0x66869bd7" referenced memory at "0x0000000c" The memory could not be "read"

Click on OK to terminate the program

I am also having problems on and off with Outlook 2007.

The PC is a Medion MD8383XL P4 3.2 processor with 1GB of RAM and running XP SP2

Hello and4545, and welcome to our forum

Please download HijackThis http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis.zip and save it to your desktop.

To extract HijackThis:

1. Right-click your file HijackThis.zip and from the menu select "Extract All".
2. The Extraction Wizard Window will appear, Click "Next".
3. Click Browse and navigate to "C:\" or the "C:\Program Files" and click "Create A New Folder" and call it "HJT" or "HijackThis" or whatever that is easy to remember and then click OK.
4. Click the Extract button.
5. Close the HijackThis.zip dialogue box.

Now double-click on hijackthis.exe and when the window opens, Press the Scan now and save a logfile button and then when it is done, copy and paste the contents of the notepad it opens as a reply to this post.

Hi and4545

Gecko unusually handles the hijack files, I'm not that great on them. Usually he's real fast on answering, more so than me. I don't see anything bad.

I would recommend that you remove the yahoo tool bar and the Robo form tool bar.

Then I would go to the Microsoft site and download Defender and run it.
Here is a link:

A lot of system that I repair lately have spyware that the user has elected to install. A lot of it is poorly written and it really slows down your system.

and4545,

Sorry for not answer sooner.
I don't see anything bad in your log

As icecube suggested I would remove the Robo form tool bar it is a know system hog.

Let's see if something is being loaded at startup that would cause the long boot time.
Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section now in the Startuplist section put a check next to "list also minor section" now click the "Generate startuplist log" button.
A notepad window will open please copy and paste the contents of notepad into you reply

Thank you both for your time.

I have removed both the Google Toolbar and Roboform and upon rebooting the system was still slow to boot.

I have also loaded Defender and this is up-to-date.

Do you have advice on what Spyware not to use?

Below is the requested Start up list.

and4545,

I really don't see anything that would eat up your resources at boot up.

But I do see that you have two anti spyware programs installed that could conflict with each other and affect load time.
Spyware Terminator and Windows Defender both programs have "active protection".
I would suggest that you uninstall one of them, I am not familiar with Spyware Terminator so I cannot offer any advice on which one.

Once your system boots all the way up how does it run?

Thanks for your help.

I have removed the spyware software and the PC is still slow to boot but not as bad.

Once booted all seems ok!

Do you still have a Lexmark printer hooked up to your system? There are two TSR's for that printer trying to run. The reason I ask, is that those drivers are so poorly written they border on malware.

Hi Icecube,

Thanks for that. I did run a lexmark printer that belonged to friend to show that the printer was no good, and then deleted (I thought) from my system.

Looking in Add/remove Programs I see this reference:
Kodak PPM Card Reader

I think the printer had a card reader attached. I cannot remove the above as it gives a 'corrupt data' error message.

Is there another way to remove these Kodak/Lexmark references?

Thanks
