PC Freeze

Hey guys,

After getting a new PSU, ive still got some probalems with the PC. Its about a year and a bit old.

Say in a day, ill start up the PC, past post and the winXP thing fine. I get to the desktop and from there ill have about 2 minutes (approx.) to do wateva and then it will freeze. Once it freezes about 15 secs after there is a long beep ( the beep doesnt sound exactly like the BIOS beep ) but it is coming from the PC tower.

Beep goes forever, drives me nuts and i just restart the PC. Once i restart, it the PC works normally again.

Thing is i just dont like these random freezes, bcoz sometimes im lucky and i can get the PC working in one shot upon bootup without no freezing.

But to add to this i do get from time to time where after PC startup at desktop the screen would just loose signal, but the PC tower will still be on and running, although the HDD light is full on.
I THink the PC has frozen, but at the same time something with the graphics are stuffed.

From those 2 boring cases ive stated, would it be okay to assume my old 6600GT is crap and i need to go get another GPU?

Any info/help/advice would be great.

Cheers

Jas0n,

I'm sorry that I somehow missed this post.

Does disk check run after the freeze up and the following reboot?
Is your hard drive SATA or IDE?

There are a few things that could be causing this error.
Bad block on the hard drive
Corrupted paging file
Sata disk controller error
Bad ram

The first thing I would try is to run a full chkdsk on the drive.
Right click on your C:\ drive and select properties > Tools tab > Check Now button.
Put checks in both boxes and click start you will get message that it cannot run now do you want to run it on startup click yes.
It will take hours to finish this check so you might let it run over night with the monitor off.

Disk check has never run until last night. HDD is Seagate, 200GB SATA II

Ran the Check disk thing overnight, after it was dont it loaded to desktop and i copped one error.

Was i supposed to keep an eye on the system check disk?

Should i try repairing WinXp via the WinXP installation disc?

Jas0n,

I think the next thing to try is to check the HHD, please download from Seagate.

If that doesn't show any errors then I think we should look at drivers for your motherboard and the SATA contorler.

Well with SeaGate tools...cant seem to run any tests....short, long, whatever it is, it just says Failed right at the beginning....so that mean my HDD is stuffed?

Jas0n,

I would say let's try the .
Select your bootable media (floppy or CD) download your selection and create the bootable media.
Now use that device to boot your system and then run the tests.

Jas0n,

Let's try removing the paging file next to see if that is the problem.

Right click on My Computer and select "Properties" now select the Advance tab.
In the "performance" section click the "Settings" button > Advance tab.
At the bottom under "Virtual Memory" click the Change button.
Please note the current setting you have so you can duplicate them after we clear the paging file.
Now put a check next to "No Paging File" and click the "Set" button and OK your way back out.
Reboot your system and go back into the paging file setup and put back the settings you noted above.

If this doesn't clear the problem then we should look at the SATA drivers.
What is the make and model number of your motherboard?

Well i foolsihy forgot the numbers, but i put in 2046 and 3046, something like that. So far its PC is working fine, but will report back in a week to tell how it is. Hopefully still good.

Mobo is Gigabyte K8N Pro SLi, i actually have another sitting here. I thought it was needed to be replaced for another problem encountered earlier, but in the end the mobo was not the cause. SO i have an extra K8N Pro Sli Mobo :p

Could i ask, wat does clearing the Pagin file do? ive never had to do it on the old PC of mine and it still runs fine, just slow....512MB Ram...hehehe

Jas0n,

The paging file is a section on your hard drive set aside for times when your physical memory gets filled up The operating system continuously moves data between the paging file and the primary memory in order to create free space for new data.
The paging file can become corrupt when the system is not shutdown properly or crashes.
