The most important thing about the registry is to back it up before you edit anything!
This page is for windows 2000 but almost all of it pertains to windows XP as well.
It will detail the ins and outs of the registry through regedit.exe and regedt32.exe

This site has a lot of tip on what you can do with the registry you just have to ignore the ads.

OK lets say you want to clean the registry of the program "deleteme.exe"
Open up regedit.exe export your registry first then press Ctrl + F at the same time.
Type deleteme.exe in the text box and press enter
Right click on the found key and select delete, next press F3 to continue the "Find" search.
Keep doing this until the search is completed.
Not all programs are that easy to remove from the registry sometimes they use different names.
Like if deleteme.exe called up a support file called undeleteme.exe
In that case you would also have to Find undeleteme.exe and remove it from the registry also.
It is not always easy to find everything related to an installed program.
Often programs will create an install log and you can use that to trace down the file names.

Im still a little unclear where installed programs store their stuff. I've read a few posts where people have had problems with installed programs and they are told to remove all references of it from the registry. What part of the registry would this be?
