added a second hd ... but...

Postby carol » Fri Sep 29, 2006 9:20 pm

I've installed a second hard drive and although windows recognises the new hardware I don't see a new drive in Windows Explorer. Where is it?

You may need to format the drive in windows please right click my computer and go to manage. Next go to a field under storage called disk management procced and you should see your other drive . Now ,right click the volume name and select format. Select NTFS unless you have a reason not to and assign it a unique drive letter , one that isnt already used for any of your volumes or network shared drives. Hope this fixes your issue. Please repost if your having trouble.

What is the error your recieving when trying to open the control panel?

You could give the segate setup utility a try, but lets say you have a usb 2.5 hd enclosure and you purchase a hd out of the box , hook the EIDE pins into there slots and run the usb cable from the external hd case to the usb port on your machine all you would have to do is format the unassinged drive and give it a letter. If your hd is in a tower , do you the secondary hd set to slave and your primary to master?

Here is a link to a site that captures the procedure.

OK, I ran the Seagate setup and it worked a dream. I guess the drive just needed partitioning because this is the action it seemed to perform. If I had known this was the reason I could have done it through drive management. In any case, thanks for your help.

Actually, I've just noticed that my DVD-RW drive has disappeared and when I hook up my digital camera to download pics, nothing happens. The Control Panel has corrected itself, by all accounts. What's happened? I've gained one drive and lost two!

Sorry, I have only one problem. I found I had a disconnected cable from the DVD drive. Must have happened when I was installing the second HD. Still don't have any joy from the front two USB sockets though. I've plugged other devices in but they are just not being seen by Windows.
