psu trouble?

Postby xav8terx » Fri Sep 29, 2006 3:09 am

Hey everyone!
I need a little guidence on an issue i'm having with a friends pc. I'm not sure about the MB, but its an AMD processor (1.5mg, don't know the # for AMD) 512 memory and about 426W psu. The thing was working fine last night, according to him, and now today it won't even power on.

When you push the button, it lights up for a second and then shuts off right after that. The fan on the psu comes on for a split second and so does the heatsink fan. Nothing gives even a hint of power except for the light indicating that the network cable is plugged in. I had to flip the switch, in the back, on and off several times to get it to do that.

I don't smell anything burnt in the psu and i took it out to visually inspect it and from my point of view nothing looked out of order. He doen't have any case fans (i gave him the proper speech about that one) so i suspect either the psu or possible overheating. but like i said not even a beep is coming out of this thing.

Any help :?: advice/or advice  would great.

Thanks,

I would suspect the power supply. Unplug the hard drive, cdrom and anything else except the motherboard and see if it boots up. It will probably exhibit the same startup and stop routine. If thats the case, you need a new power supply.

I had a similar experience last week with a fairly new power supply. It was rated at 430 watts, but on the Manufactures label, is says "Output 240W, All output is extend to 430W max." I haven't quite figured out what that means as far as what they are communicating, but I'm not buying any more of them.
