New Power Pack

Postby stretch » Mon Sep 11, 2006 5:56 pm

I recently went to fix my friends PC and it kept over heating , so I decided to flick the voltage switch on the back to knock it down to 130 or summet . As i did this there was a yellow spark which came from inside the power packs fan .

It would no transmit power to the M/Board after this spark .

I went home and grabbed an old Power Pack and jammed that in but i found there was one cable which was missing . Its a 4 pin ( 2 x 2 Pins ) which plugs in the center of the M/Board . Well more or less center .

This power pack however allows the pc to turn on and the fans run etc etc but the keyboard lights dont work and the moniter light stays on orange instead of magnetising and flicking to yellow . Im guessing this cable is what sends power to the Keyboard , mouse , USB and moniter ( shes using the moniter port on the M/Board ) because it just doesnt want to work .

If i buy the correct powerpack will the pc work again or have i just invested in a hard uppercut from her dad.

Please advise me so I can stop wondering and prepare for my fate ??

Kind Regards

Chances are that only the power supply was damaged.

Running 220 volts through a 120 volt transducer will cause the spark you saw and should not have gotten to the motherboard.

**PHEW**

What about the reason it would not let the keyboard port , mouse port, etc . Is that because of this 4 pin cable which was missing?

Kind regards

The 4 pin Molex connector supplies 12 volt power to the motherboard.

Without this 12 volts to the motherboard the system can not initialize and that's why no peripherals work.
