deleting a file from a memory card problem

I am trying to delete a file from a memory card. but it wont budge. i delete it successfully but as soon as i plug it back into the card reader its there again. BUT with 0 bytes. anyone suggest a way to delete this, without formatting the hole card!!!!! :(
