I have put in a 40 gig hard drive and the pc says that there is only 5.75 gig able to be used. What can I do to get the rest of it back. I'm using win98 se can anyone help?

it may not be being detected properly in your bios. I'd check two things.. that the IDE channel is set to AUTO and that you didn't put a jumper on the drive that would make it revert to compatibilty mode (which would reduce the size it reports to the bios)

The only jumper I used was to make it the master with a slave present. Is there any way to fix it without reformating it?

Just to add to what teststrips said;
You might want to run f-disk on the drive just to make sure there are no NTFS or Linux partitions on there.
There could also be a large amount of unallocated space on the drive or an unreadable Extended partition.

Heres the catch. The hard drive is a brand new western digital 40 gig hd. It was still in its store bought packaging. I ran fdisk in the beginning and had to create a dos part in order to install 98 I had to enable large disk use also. I really do apprecate the help. I have never used 98 before until now. My other 3 pcs have xp home and pro.
