Laptop fan makes noise :(

Postby Weta » Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:39 am

Don't know if I'll ever solve this, but might as well ask for tips..

My laptop-fan is making noise (noise that's not supposed to be made).
When it spins down, I hear chirpy spin-down sounds, and sometimes (at a certain speed I guess) it makes a constant whiny noise.

My laptop is a Zepto Z-Note 4100, which is the same chassis as a CL50 from AOpen. I don't think I'll dare myself to change the fan, but I'd like to try and have a look.

Anyone who has experience with opening laptops, or even a CL50?

The machine is a Centrino, so the fan doesn't makes much normal noise, thus these noises are even more annoying..

Thanks in advance!

Fraid not - I've always steered clear of opening lappys. However if it's out of warranty and you're careful I see no reason why it wouldn't work - assuming the fan is in an easy place and you can get an exact replica (in terms of spin speed and blade diameter)

Opening up a laptop is like trying to open one of those chinese wood puzzle jewlery boxes--I don't recommend it. Getting to the fan without causing any damage-- you really need to know what you are doing.

If that fan stops, you have major problems. See if your laptop has web site support and go from there.

did you try to clean it yet? blowing the dus toff it can help a lot. Sometimes you can do it from the outside . Also make sure there are no paper chips that got in there.

you could try cleaning the fan, but usually once a fan starts making noise you won't be able to resurrect it.

I've taken about 15 laptops apart, and find that it's generally something you have to go really slow with, and take extreme care. There are a lot of mylar data cables that are very easy to rip... and almost impossible to find a replacement for.

Another problem I possibly forsee is that the fan may be a 5v model (where normal fans run from 12v), so it might be difficult to find a replacement.

sorry for all the bad news!
