I have two hard drives inside my pc and a dvd writer.

I bought a usb to ide converter so that i could connect another hard drive via the usb port rather than switching hardrives inside when i want files from another hard drive.

I tried my usb to ide converter last week and it worked on my dvd drive, it installed by itself under xp ok and i could see it in my computer, but ive attached the hard drive to the usb to ide converter and nothing happens. it doesnt detect or install, the usb ports are fine as ive used them

Can anyone help?

Did you hook-up the external Power Supply to the HD correctly?
Have you rebooted with it hooked-up?
Do you have the IDE plug reversed?

Yes i did hook up the power supply correctly

I attached my old dvd rom to check and at first the light didnt come on so swapped sockets and it did and it appeared in my computer, so i then reattached the hard drive and nothing, so rebooted and there was still no detection of it

I did only have the ide converter plugged into the back of the hard drive but then realised i had this plug which they both fitted into, i added this onto it and there was still no action, your not supposed to need to reboot when its connected so i dont know whats going on

Just grasping in the dark here, but what were the jumper settings on both the cd drive & the hard disk?
