Hi,

just bought an apple ibook with "Airport" wireless networking and i want to be able to wirelessly share high speed broadband and files, printers and scanners that are connected to my desktop.

what equipment do i need?

just a combined 3 in 1 router/switch and access point and my laptop with its wireless card?

I don't have one myself and so can't give you any specific advice, but if I was buying one I'd want the following features:

WPA (wifi protected access - better security than WEP)
WEP (encrypts transmission - worth having, but can be cracked in ~30mins, therefore you're better off with WPA)
Mac address filtering
The ability to turn off SSID broadcasting
Stateful packet inspecting firewall.
