My windows 8 hard drive won't open. checked with parted magic it shows files. Another hard drive with os win7 works fine.
win8 drive appears locked. Can it be fixed without loss of data and applications. Cannot access drive in any way with windows. Grateful for any help

What is the exact error message that you receive when trying to boot to windows 8?
Do your have a Windows 8 DVD?

Hello Gecko. Thank you for response. Yes, I have genuine win8 upgrade installation disc.
On bootup blue screen says 'Recovery, PC couldn't start properly. after multiple tries the OS on PC failed to start.
so it needs to be repaired. error code 0xc0000001'.
Selecting repair from disc offers alternatives. Safe mode does not enter os. Only command prompt is available but beyond my knowledge to try, not even sure if will acess anything, hence my reason for seeking assistance. Safe mode reboots into blue screen. When I try again to enter windows blue screen again suggests lookup error code 0xc0000218. Hence OP heading. That is my understanding: media file problem deteriorated into hard binary lock.
also older image file is not accessible, not recognised for some reason when I try.

Boot the system using your win8 upgrade installation disc and select repair.
Once you get to the command prompt enter the following command and press enter (note space between the k and c and between the : and /)
chkdsk c: /f

This will start a disk check with the fix option, it will take some time to finish when, it's done reboot the system normally it should fix it

Thanks for your help. All fixed. 1 file processed. 4KB bad sector. All up and going. New image after thorough check for all malware.
