Processor at 100%

Hi
Wondering if anyone can help me on this one. Just put PC together,
Athlon xp3200+, 1GB PC3200 RAM, FX5600 Graphics card, WIN XP Pro.

On startup or reboot, about 50% of the time, processor shoots up to 100% usage not even leaving enough juice to move the mouse. Nothing unusual in task manager - shows 99% system idle. Even happens on a clean install with just mouse and keyboard attached and no additional drivers. It has now started to happen when PC left on for a while. Everything is fine in safe mode though.

Processor temp is constantly running at around 40%C so that shouldn't be problem. I've tried swapping RAM and it's exactly the same. I'm guessing it could be some hardware (although that's only really graphics card and processor).

Anyone any ideas or anything I can use to test??

Many thanks

Abs

Have you checked for a BIOS update for your motherboard?

I would also suggest you check for driver updates for all your other hardware like video and sound.

Sorry, should have mentioned, latest Bios Update and all latest drivers input. But exactly the same happens even with a fresh install. I was thinking possibly faulty processor cache?? Is there any way I can test for things like this?

Many thanks
