memory problem?

Postby jroby » Fri May 14, 2004 5:10 am

If I'm running iTunes (listening to music), uploading music to my ipod, and surfing the web at the same time should my music skip, my ipod transfer slow down to less than 1 song per 5 seconds (by firewire standards that's slow), and have my mouse skip around on the screen? I'd say no, and in fact that wasnt the case less than a month ago when I reformated, my setup ran fine... I really have no idea what the problem is... I have 512 pc3200 ocsystem.com ram (twin sticks of 256 - cas 2.5 - dual channel), amd 2600+ 333fsb, 40 gig 5200 rpm 2 megs of cache (formatted in NTFS), and a radeon 9800 pro 128 meg. I'm running windowsXP pro. Do I need more ram, or am I having other problems?

re skipping

Postby badpolarbear » Fri May 14, 2004 1:09 pm

Quite often if one is playing music and uploading music at the same time and there are two different sound programs running there will be conflict. Ive had the same problem myself. Also if the websites you are viwing have adio in them that will cause a problem too.

Let me try to explain this a little better. Lets say Im playing a tune in my PCI Audio Applications and I open something else that uses Media Player. There is going to be conflict in the sound card. Some times when the mouse cursor skips it is from the conflict. If the sound media skips so does the cursor. I have found in the past when working with sound it is best to do one thing at a time. There have been times when I tried to do too much at once and sound quality came out poor or with skips or static in it.

As bpb said you could have too many things running. It could also be Spyware "phoning home".
Download and install . Now Run it and post a copy of the Log File here.
That way we can see what's running and if you've got conflicts.

You might also want to go START, RUN. type msconfig, click, when the box opens click on startup, check and see if you more than one audio program starting on startup.you may have more than one running in the background. I generally dont have any audio programs starting on startup.
