Mess Up Old PC

Postby johnny909 » Wed Mar 03, 2004 12:52 am

Hi, I have an old Compaq K2-6 computer that was working ok until I stared working on it. I was going to get rid of the computer and stared erasing all personal files, then some program files got deleted. Then I lost the ability to use the cd rom, and the computer would only boot in safe mode. Then I had the bight idea of cleansing the hard drive and starting over from the begining --- i also envisioned booting Debian Linux to it when Windows 98 was gone. Now everything has gone south.
The computer will not boot at all, and about the only thing it is saying is:
"Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g., C:\windows\ command.com)"
c>

I cannot get it to say anything else, or do anything at all. Is there a way to reboot and/or reinstall Win98 or some other OS from this point?
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Have you tried booting with a Boot Disk?

I found and used an old Win 98 boot disk and got some virtual cd rom drivers. I never could load Windows98, the setup program kept saying that it needed Windows to run this program --- which is totally whack. So, I tried installing Debian Linux, and would have been successful, except that the CD I burned off the internet had a corrupted file. That really was a buzz killer. Nevertheless, I found the box of Lindows that I bought when Google was running a special about 10 days ago. And Lindows is loading on my old PC. So it worked out because that is really what I wanted to do anyway.
Thanks for your help. :rox:
