cooling fan problem

Postby jefjbar » Sun Jan 06, 2008 11:24 pm

hello,
I have a Toshiba satellite p105-9722....
here is my problem; its getting hot

the reason; the cooling fan does not operate like it used to.

heres the deal; the cooling fan used to run at a low speed continuously keeping the PC relatively cool. now it just kicks on, at full blast, after the pc gets hot, and only in short bursts, which has kept it from overheating and shutting down, so far. During the boot, the fan works fine, but after the OS has booted the fan doesnt seem to want to run at all. The CPU fan works fine, bty.

so, the fan works,,,, just not properly, or at the right time, or like it should.
Is there a way to set the fan right again? I have tried SpeedFan, but the fans do not register.

Please, if anyone has info on how to control the fans?
Thanks in advance.....Jefjbar

Have you looked into a notebook cooler? They are extremely effective, even when the built in fan is working right and are very inexpensive. Im not sure that theres much else you can do with it.

Ok, I just went int o BIOS during the boot,,,, The fan runs nonstop, just like it should... Once the OS boots, the fan does not work... the problem has to be with the OS (Windows XP pro)... Is there a control somewhere in windows, for the exhaust fan,,,,, I can not find one....... If the fan works fine during the boot, and before the OS is loaded, I would think that the driver is fine, if there is one...And, the heat sensor is obviously detecting the high heat, because it is trying its best to cool down the PC,(the OS is not running, mind you) Also, I do have the Thermal Mode Control set to performance..

liljim, yes I am now looking into notebook coolers,, although i should not need one if i get the fan right once again,, unless i plan to play Oblivion for 4 hours straight.. Which i do not.. Thank you for your input.

well, i decided that because the fan works during the boot process, and quits after the OS loads, the problem is probably somewhere that i would never find it. I came to that conclusion after a full day of searching for an answer. Finally, fed up with everything, i formated the hard drive and did a complete system recovery. guess what? The exhaust fan works just like it should, humming along, i have never enjoyed the sound of the fans so much.

Now i just need to reinstall all of my apps..bummer.... But if we look on the bright side, I have a clean system to work with, ready for optimization.
