Checking Video Card

Postby RWD3 » Tue Feb 28, 2006 6:15 pm

Hey all,
real quick I was wondering how to make sure your video card is running properly?
Also how do you check if everything is getting enough power from the supply?

Also as an off topic question. When I close Battlefield 2, the backround music still plays for a couple of seconds after the window is closed and my computer is a little slow for a few seconds after that. I was wondering if this is natural?

could you say what your spec is please?
cpu, ram, gpu, psu, HDD size and used.
I guess you could put dxdiag into start>run and then do the direct X tests. lol. Maybe try running a 3D mark test, or some kind of graphics benchmark. Then if it crashes, you have a problem. If it is performing slowly, try to use google to find how similar GPUs perform. just do a search for something like "6600GT (or whatever your card is) benchmark" or "[card] review".

Also, what makes you think your GPU isnt working properly?

The Battlefield 2 thing is certainly natural. I get it too. If you want to stop it playing straight away, press CTRL + ALT + DEL then click the process tab, find battlefield2.exe, and click end process. But you will have to do this everytime.

You can use power supply calculators to see what power your computer needs. I don't know how accurate they are though.

Here are a few:

Thanks for the help. From the psu caclulator it says my wattage is around 235, which shouldn't be a problem since my psu is 450.

Is there anyway to check if that is working properly?

And I didn't know that the post-game lag was normal. thanks.

my set up is:

Amd 3500+ Venice core socket 939
(2x512) Kingston value ram. ddr400 3200
Evga nvidia 7800gt
Asus mother board A8N5X
western digital 120g ide hard drive
450w psu that came with a xion case.

Idk my computer once hung up during a battlefield game and shutdown completly. It happened only once, but it worried me. It might have been due to the recent bad update made by EA, but idk. Other then that im running battlefield on highest settings. I will try the dxdiag when i get out of class. thanks again

by the sound of your problem, don't bother with the DX tests, they only check to see if your card can handle DX 7, 8 and 9. If it does go wrong then you have some real problems :S
BF2 is really quite buggy. I mean they cant even get the search filters to work  It mightve just been a one off. Maybe see if your GPU is over heating in the nVidia display properties

Is there an actual issue? Or do you just want to know that it's working OK? Because if you don't have any problems then I think you can assume it's working ok.....for now
