I recently bought an optical mouse (not cordless, just optical - PS2 interface) to replace an old style mouse with the ball underneath. The computer is a Pentium-200 running Windows 95. The mouse itself is a generic brand that I bought on the internet.
I put the mouse in and rebooted. The mouse motion was erratic. For example, I would try to move the mouse to the right, but as it would move across the screen, it would sporadically jump back to the left. Likewise whatever direction I tried to move it. The mouse is kind of usable, but barely. Frankly the old mouse is much easier to move where I want it.
I took this mouse and put it in a new computer running Windows XP, and it works fine. Then I took a different optical mouse (also a generic brand, but a different kind than the previous optical one) that I have been using in that same XP system, and which has also been used in a Windows 98-SE system, and put it into the Pentium-200/Windows-95 system. This one was really bad. As I would move the mouse, it would move okay for a few seconds; then it would start jumping all over the screen. This mouse was really unusable, and I had to resort to keyboard shortcuts just to reboot so I could again put the old mouse back in.
I checked the mouse driver, but it looks like the generic Windows 95 mouse driver. From all that I have read, I shouldn't need a special mouse driver just because I'm switching from old-style to optical mouse. And I wouldn't know what driver to try to use for these optical mice, since I don't see a brand name on either of them.
The one thing that is different about these mice (from the old one) is that they have the scroll-wheel in the middle mouse button. I'm not necessarily expecting the scroll wheel to work in this old Windows 95 system. In fact, I wasn't using the scroll wheel at all. I was just trying to move the mouse around.
If I do need a special/different mouse driver, what driver do I use and where do I get it? For example, one of the mice says: "Model H3003, S/N K0309036821; Made in China", but nothing that looks like a brand name. So I don't know where to look for a driver.
Please help!
Thanks,
Glen
