Router/internet connection problem...

All computer hardware support

Postby PCguy » Tue Apr 19, 2005 4:10 pm

Ok, I have been thinking about this one for awhile. This is how I would handle it.

Buy a crossover cable (should be cheap and it will say crossover on it. RadioShack has them) and put in static IPs on both machines. Then use the crossover cable to connect the two PCs together. Ping PC1 from PC2. Then Ping PC2 from PC1. This will tell you if your two PCs are able to talk to one another. If they can then we can say it's the router with the issue. If they can't then it's the NIC on the second PC that isn't functioning.

Here's a trick that will save you the cost of a crossover cable.

Boot up the working computer to the router using a fixed ip address.

Take the other computer and give it a fixed ip address of one higher or lower than the one that we know that works. Reboot the system.

Then unplug the cat 5 cable from the router (going to the good machine) and plug it directly into the "problem child." The two machines should be linked together at this point. You should be able to access the bad machines drive from the good one.

I don't know why this works, but we use this technique for transfering data when swapping out old dells. Anybody know why a patch cable works in this instance?

This thread is rather long and I might have misssed one or two items, but PCguys suggestion that the nic could be bad is probably right on. If it had been a working system that all of a sudden had this problem, I would swap out the nic

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions... I will work on these as soon as I can. Unfortunately I've got some Inlaws in town for my entire weekend. So I won't be able to do any more on this for about a week.....

I'll get back to you on this as soon as I can....

Thanks a ton
