Ram Frequency?

Postby Ticilli » Wed Jul 21, 2004 8:17 pm

Hi, i'm relatively new to all this PC building upgrading, and i am now considering purchasing more ram for that performance boost. Problem is, when i bought my pc, it was a barebone, and the essentials (mobo, ram, the processor etc) were already fitted. Now my Board is from Asus, it runs at 266mhz i believe (have to check that).

Now to my problem, I have 1 stick of DDR (256mb) in there, but i'm not sure what frequency it is. So before i bought it i thought i should ask. Does the RAM frquency have to be running at the same freq as the MBoard or does the RAMs freq just detail how fast it runs?

Thanks for any help

generally ram is rated at 200, 266, 333, 400 and up... as if your mobo frequency is curently running at 266 as long as the ram you buy is 266 or above there be no problems. the extra speed will just be redundant.

Could you tell us the board model number and what CPU is on it?

ok, i looked around for the box and it's not an asus board so where i got that from i dunno. But i think this is it.

board is:Shuttle KT266A
and the processor is:AMD XP 1700+ @1.4ghz

so i should go for another 256mb stick of DDR at 266mhz then?

Shuttle KT266A has 4 x 168-pin DDR DIMM Slots and holds up to 4GB,1 GB per slot of PC2100 (266MHz) memory.Adding another 256 would show a performance increase and would run pretty smooth but just so you know,it can hold alot more.

Last question if anyone know. I've had a look around and the only RAM i can find are PC 2100 256mb 184 pin (i think) sticks of RAM, would my board be compatable with these for would i have to find some 168 pin versions instead?

It's amazing what you can learn from a box. Just looking at the label shows that it is a:

Shuttle AK32a m/board based off the KT266a chipset i believe, it supports 2 DDR-DIMM (maxing at 2 gig DDR, and 2 gig SD-R), the DDR indeed being 184 pin, so now i'm all set to obtain/purchase/buy some RAM.

I thank you all for your time
