Unix at uni

Im currently back at uni and they want us to study unix commands, its all new to me and aint exactly sure how to write out unix commands, aint exactly sure what unix is either. It seems to be like MS DOS? :S if anyone can explain and give me some hints i be greatful thanks , Rob.
