OK,i have 2 machines networked through a switch.

The Host machine dual boots XP and Linux
The client is XP only

These machines share internet when the host is in XP
I want the client to see the internet when the host is in linux

I dont know jack about networking linux period,muchless linux to windows.

Should i start messing with something like samba or is there a known easy way to accomplish this.I havent looked into it very much as of yet..

There should be a config utility in Mandrake 10 that will set the Nic and the Modem up for you. The to setting it up right is being familiar with the terminology. Gateway for instance. You want Linux to act as the gateway for your other connections. In other words, you set up the default gateway on the dial up modem. The NIC will then use that gateway to connect to the internet. Samba may need to be set up if you plan to share files across the two platforms.

Another way to do this would be to build a router from an old 386 machine or something to that nature. Use a program that runs from a floppy called freesco, or my personal favorite Smoothwall. This is basically a 30 meg program you can load to a small hard disk and it turns the old clunker into a linux firewall router. Fully customizable and really easy to set up. Has an interface much like a regular router. Uses 192.168.1.1 to configure the router settings in a browser, or if you feel geeky that day, you can access it in the terminal.

I once again had to pull out the drive i had linux on (i have a notebook that needed it more) so when i get bored again im going to create a partition on my normal hdd just for linux.Im glad to know it can be done though,as soon as im set back up i'll repost my situation on it.
