If you have an XP CD, boot from it. At the first menu screen press R to enter the recovery console. You will be asked to choose your windows installation, usually you just press 1 then enter. Enter your password if you have one, if not just press enter and you'll get a command prompt. At the prompt, type chkdsk /p and press enter. This will check your drive volume for any errors and repair as needed. Once its complete, type exit and press enter. It will reboot and hopefully boot back into windows. A bad sp2 install can cause some tough problems sometimes, if chkdsk doesnt work you just might have to do a repair install. This would overwrite system files while leaving previously installed software intact. At worse, you may have to reinstall some drivers.
