MBR Virus and Unavailable Hard-Drive

Postby Twiylite » Wed Jun 27, 2007 11:53 am

Hi,

I am experiencing a serious issue with my PC and despite a lot of research I have been unable to find a fix and any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

My computer became infected with a virus which then proceeded to install all kinds of other viruses and malware. Using an antivirus program I was able to remove most of them but seemed to be having an issue where if the AV tried to remove one of the virus' I would get a bluescreen crash.

After a number of reboots I then started to get to a situation where I couldn't even get into windows it would now boot straight to a bluescreen. By this time I figured I was stuck with a reformat of the C: drive and some data loss, however when I ran Windows XP Setup all four of the partitions on the harddrive were coming up as Drive Unavailable.

I did a bit of research and suspected I had a MBR virus which was preventing access to the HD. I have since then used a number of MBR tools to delete and rewrite the MRB but have still been unable to access my drive. I can delete the partition info in FDISK and recreate a new partition but this always comes up as Drive Unavailable in the Windows XP Setup.

I suspect the I have not managed to remove the Virus from the MBR and that this is why even after deleting the MBR it is somehow getting re-infected. Can anyone:

1) Confirm that the above makes sense and is in line with how a MBR virus might behave.
2) Suggest a tool for ensuring that any MBR virus is cleared from both the MBR and the memory.

Thanks in Advance,

Nick
