ICS Networking. Client not receiving IP address from DHCP.

I have my client computer receiving internet from my computer that has a wireless connection to the internet through my neighbor. It has been working without problems for a couple months but this morning the client computer isn't connecting to the internet any longer. File sharing is working just not the internet.

I reconfigured all of the settings on both computers. I have ICS on my computer which is the host with my wireless internet and it should be sending out IP address but when I try renewing the IP Address on the client it doesn't pick anything up. All I know is my wife downloaded a couple of seamingly inoscent programs in which could have done something just don't know. I will try clearing out spyware and wait for a reply.

Both computers are running Win XP Pro SP2.

A...Have you tried pinging each computer from one and other ?

you sound as though you know a little about computers but il humor you anyway lol

Start >> Run >> CMD >> ipconfig >> note the ip address' from each computer >> ping 192.168.*.* ( should be something close to that )

If you get replies from each comp try turning off your firewalls and try again ( same if u dont receive a reply )

If nothing still happens try contacting your ISP if you cant get internet on ANY of the computers ...

also have you tried turning off your modem and router for 1 minute and restarting your computers ?

Im no expert but ive had a similar prob with networking.

Hope it helps

Pinging.

They currently both ping to each other because I gave a static IP and gateway address to the client. If I use automatic the client computer doesn't get any addresses. I am pretty sure the problem lies with my computer that is supposely set up as a DHCP or Gateway isn't sending out IPs.

I just remembered that I ran registryfix yesterday. I restarted the computer a couple of times after that and it worked so I don't know if that was the problem.

Quantum,

Did you manually reset all your ICS setting or did you use the wizard?

Can you ping from the client to the internet using either the url or the IP?
Start > run type cmd and press enter, now type:
ping yahoo.com (note the space after ping) and press enter
ping 66.94.234.13 (note the space after ping) and press enter

The fact that file sharing is working means that the client IP it has been assigned is working.
This could be a malware/spyware infection on the client system.

If you want you could post a Hijackthis log in that forum and I'll have a look.
Download HijackThis http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis.zip and save it to your desktop.

To extract HijackThis:

1. Right-click your file HijackThis.zip and from the menu select "Extract All".
2. The Extraction Wizard Window will appear, Click "Next".
3. Click Browse and navigate to "C:\" or the "C:\Program Files" and click "Create A New Folder" and call it "HJT" or "HijackThis" or whatever that is easy to remember and then click OK.
4. Click the Extract button.
5. Close the HijackThis.zip dialogue box.

Now double-click on hijackthis.exe and when the window opens, Press the Scan now and save a logfile button and then when it is done, copy and paste the contents of the notepad it opens as the post in the new thread in the .

Host Computer

Ethernet Adapter Wireless Netowrk Connection:
IP Address 192.168.1.124
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server 192.168.1.1
DNS Server 192.168.1.1

Local Area Connection

IP Address 192.168.0.1
Dhcp Enabled No
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway
DNS Server 192.168.1.1

Client Computer computer will not ping Gateway 192.168.1.1 nor any outside connections. It will only ping host computer. I am wondering where it says DHCP Enabled is no could be causing the problem and wondered how to enable it.

When resetting the settings I tried manually doing it and through the wizard. It always says limited or no connectivity unless I manually enter the IP address or gateway. I will post my hijack this log.

Quantum,

It looks like your DHCP service is not started.

To start Dhcp services go to your Control panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services.
In the left pane select Services now in the right pane scroll down to DHCP Client and double click on it.
On the general tab in the Startup Type section use the dropdown to select Automatic
Next click the Start button then click apply and OK and close your way back out.

See if that resolves the problem

The DHCP Client was already started and on Automatice. I stopped it and then restarted it. It still says DHCP not enabled in ipconfig /all.
