Mcafee used to catch them before they had a chance to do any damage,
now it warns me after it gets in and does its thing.

You have a number of trojans, viurs and spyware all could be prevented by upgrading to Windows XP sp2.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Boot into safe mode:
If the computer is running, restart Windows
After you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
kernels8.exe
ibm00001.exe
xpupdate.exe
taskdir.exe
8DDC.tmp3584.exe

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ib14.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\IeHelperExVSS.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\kernels8.exe
C:\WINDOWS\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\winlogon.exe
C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\taskdir.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\senssrv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Lady.exe

Next run your McAfee anti virus for a full system scan.

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

Boot into safe mode with networking once you get the black screen
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the same time to bring up the task manager.
In task manager go to Application tab > New Task > type Explorer and press enter do you get a start button now?
If you do get the Start button then run hijackthis and post a new log.

If Explorer closes again then Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the same time
Application tab > New Task > click the browse button and browse to your Hijackthis folder and select hijackthis make anew log.
Leave the log open now press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and then type iexplore.exe and press enter.
Once you get back here post the new log file and I’ll see what is causing the porblem.

It looks like you have a version of VX2 infection.
Please download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Alright, i made it this far:
Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
But when i press enter i get this message:
...This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.
where do i find the Folder Options?
Oh, and how do i turn my task manager back on?

To restore the .bat file extension file association please download
Once it’s download double click on it and then click yes the bat file extension will be fixed.

As for turning on the task manager that should be fixed once we get the VX2 infection removed.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please download
Extract killbox but do not run it yet

You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winm32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winm32.dll

Now run KillBox and paste the below into the text box or browse to that file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winm32.dll
Now put a check next to 'Delete on reboot' and on unregister dll before delete
Click on the red X, click yes to delete file on reboot, Click yes to reboot now.

Once your system has rebooted and post a new HiJackThis log.
